Ret. Gen. Eric Shinseki lead the way (huah) in reorganizing the United States Army (USA) in order to tackle new challenges to American military superiority in the 21st century. After experiences in Bosnia, Somalia, and other hotspots in the post-Cold War world, the need to reorganize the USA in such a way that brigade-sized units could be quickly deployed to hotspots as necessary was critical in facilitating the quick and efficient buildup for both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Shinseki prepared the USA to fight the war on terror before Saddam, before Osama, and before 9/11.
Yet when his public testimony regarding required troop levels for post-victory control of Iraq went up against the 150,000-troop fantasies of Donald Rumsfeld et. al., he was thumped out of not only his position as Army top dog but the military altogether. Hindsight might be 20/20, but foresight is gold. Shinseki's foresight regarding future military challenges in terms of both the war on terror and the war in Iraq could have saved many people a lot of grief, and most importantly, the lives of thousands of brave American soldiers.
It's just too bad Shinseki lost. It's just too bad it took so long for Rumsfeld to lose, because there are too many Army personnel who lost their lives over the past three years due to his arrogance and lack of respect for professional military men. It's sad and horribly wrong that the USA lost due to this bastard who's going to get off scott free and enjoy the rest of his years in some posh home in McLean.
